Reducing the Appearance of Scars with Red Light Therapy

Do scars make you feel self-conscious about baring your skin? Then you’ll love the way red light therapy (RLT) at Aesthetic Envy and Wellness in Henderson and Las Vegas, Nevada, minimizes the appearance of scars by promoting healing from the inside.

Aesthetic expert Kim Nguyen, PA-C, and our team use gentle and safe red light therapy to enhance the health and appearance of your skin, from fine lines and wrinkles to stubborn scar tissue.

Here’s a closer look at how RLT can help you reduce the appearance of scars and rejuvenate your skin.

Understanding scar tissue

Scarring occurs as part of your body’s healing process. Of course, not all wounds and injuries result in scars. Whether you develop a scar depends on several factors, including the nature of the wound, how it heals, whether the wound gets infected, and other things, like picking at or pulling off a scab.

When your skin is wounded, your skin regenerates by creating a network of collagen fibers that develop into the skin. In instances where your body tries to close the wound quickly, the collagen fibers may develop as fast as possible, creating excess collagen and a visible scar.

Scars may lessen in appearance over time since your skin regenerates about once a month. But since the new skin cells often follow the same pattern as the ones they’re replacing, scars often create more scar tissue.

How red light therapy helps minimize scars

Red light therapy, which is also called low-level laser therapy and colder laser light, uses specific wavelengths that penetrate below the surface layer of scar tissue to promote regeneration deeper in the body.

RLT treatments penetrate the mitochondria within your skin cells. Mitochondria are your cells’ powerhouses, helping generate energy at the cellular level to rejuvenate your skin. When the RLT stimulates your mitochondria, they trigger a boost in your body’s natural collagen production.

This increase in collagen starts in the deeper layers below the surface of your scar. As the older skin cells turnover, new skin cells replace them following the organized lattice of new collagen fibers instead of the scar tissue.

RLT also activates your body’s stem cells, unspecialized cells that develop into normal, healthy, scar-free skin. Over time, RLT can minimize the appearance of different kinds of scars, including:

RLT is safe and doesn’t have any side effects, and the light used isn’t the same as harmful ultraviolet (UV) light. The number of sessions you need varies based on the condition and age of the scars. Most patients experience noticeable results in about 8-12 weeks.
